305. OUR DAILY LIFE ON UMMO.
The greatest difficulty we foresee in describing our way of life on the Planet UMMO lies precisely not only in the great difference between the two social structures (EARTH and UMMO) but in the variety of organization, furniture, technical equipment and utensils of every kind, very many of which are unknown to you.
This means that whenever, in the course of our report, we refer to each of these pieces of furniture, tools, devices or equipment, a digression will be needed to explain its nature and function.
As an excessively lengthy and technical description runs the risk of being understood only by a small number of specialists, we prefer, Mr Sesma Manzano, to give you this report written in the most entertaining way possible, knowing the psychology of certain readers to whom you will direct this information, but without prejudice to supplementing it in due course with whatever technical data may be needed by those experts who request them from you.
---------------------------------------
When the children reach 13.7 (EARTH) years of age, they are called upon on our Planet by a kind of University or polytechnic School-Colony (which we call UNAUO WI) controlled by the Higher Council of UMMO (UMMOAELEWE).
The OMGEEYIE (MARRIED COUPLE), if it has no other offspring, is left alone. This, which for you earthlings is a cause of deep spiritual depression, does not provoke negative affective reactions in the family cells of our Planet, since our society foresees this contingency as something as normal as the earthly husband leaving for his daily work.
So much so that, until the youngster of either sex leaves his integral training at the UNAWO WI (UNIVERSITY), he is forbidden, save in rare exceptions, to see or hear his parents or relatives. Not so his parents, who at certain hours can enjoy the sight of their children through the great hemispherical screen of the UULODAXAABI (This room, common to all homes, consists of a chamber vaulted in the shape of a spherical cap, formed by a plastic sheet through which one sees the three-dimensional image transmitted by receiving equipment bearing a distant resemblance to earthly television. The viewer placed at the centre can thus find himself surrounded by a landscape or inside a factory located many KOAE away (1 KOOAE = 8.71 km). (See Image No. 7).
We were saying that the mental habits contracted over many thousands of (UMMO) years (1 UMMO YEAR = 0.2118 EARTH years) have accustomed us to bear this early separation between the young and adult members of the family group, and yet marriage bonds are sacred and solid among us.
A young OMGEEYIE (COUPLE) usually lives in its XAABI (DWELLING), which you can imagine as a small tower-hotel or chalet located in the open countryside. This dwelling has been provided to it by the Council of UMMO when the married couple, having completed their cultural and technical training, becomes part of the community of UMMO.
Its purchase has not been made with money. In a few instants the calculating machines of our XANMOO AYUBAA Network have computed the value of an index number reflecting the intellectual performance of both during their years of study, comparing it naturally with their capacity or mental quotient, the work assignment of the spouses (Although the woman is exempt from work for the community while she has children) and other acquisitions that both spouses may have made previously and which may reduce their purchasing possibilities, just as the state of his bank account may be taken into account for one of you earthlings.
For the rest, both spouses can choose, within certain limits in the region (imposed by the calculation), the location and secondary characteristics of colour, layout and structure of their new home.
The planning of housing construction is carried out taking into account the natural demographic growth of the population of UMMO, so it is obvious that the number of free dwellings amply covers needs. The problem, moreover, is simple to solve if you bear in mind that population growth every twelve UMMO years (Equivalent to 2.64 earth years) is 3.6 per cent. (At present).
But not all our humanity lives in these dwellings scattered in the open Countryside. Approximately 27 per cent is located, for work reasons, within great Colonies or Cities somewhat reminiscent of Earthly Garden Cities, but these inhabitants enjoy other advantages in compensation.
We love Nature dearly. We men and Yie of UMMO direct and offer our lives to our Generator WOA or GOD, so that intimate contact with his creation or generation: The Countryside; our IUMMA (IUMMA IS THE STAR SUN THAT ILLUMINATES THE DAYS OF UMMO); the sidereal spaces; are always present in our spirit. Just as Earthly Civilization seems to distance you from that Nature of which you are an integral part, We direct our technology and Civilization towards a greater communion with and understanding of it.
It is true that, for various biological reasons, among which not the least important is the greater atmospheric protection against the external radiation that determines a good number of genetic mutations, we have on UMMO a less rich variety of Flora and Fauna.
But on the other hand we enjoy an exuberant vegetation, due partly to our old underground network of water channelling, made with pipes of porous mortar through which the water filters, distributing it rationally through the permeable strata of the ground at a pressure calculated according to the characteristics of the soil and of the plant species planted.
Our agronomic technicians have thus succeeded in endowing the Landscape of our Planet with a very rich range of nuances, thanks to the selection and aesthetic distribution of trees and shrubs integrated into immense forests. The relief is respected in its entirety. The old OGOKOOA (CAUSEWAYS OR ROADS) that spoiled the view of the marvellous landscapes of UMMO have now disappeared.
The only apparently discordant note is the dwelling towers we call SAABI. These towers, shaped like EARTHLY MUSHROOMS, sometimes emerge, Especially at night, from their well-like pit, from which they can rise or descend at will.
To an earthly observer, the countryside of UMMO at nightfall appears as if studded with earthly coastal lighthouses. This is because our dwellings rotate at the will of their occupants, to allow them a continuous view of the horizon. Their lights thus describe a rotary movement that causes this small optical illusion.
What are our XAABI like? It is difficult to describe one of our dwellings to you without your believing that all the others are identical or very similar. In reality, although with less variety than on Earth, there are many types of towers with different functional structures.
The old Mansions you would call Palaces exist only as carefully preserved remains of an unjust Civilization that will never return. There are no appreciable Class differences, and naturally the standard dwellings of UMMO are a significant index of that social equality. The case may arise, paradoxical to you, of a skilled worker having a XAABI somewhat more comfortable than that of the married couple of the Overall Director of the Industrial Plant in which he is a mere number. But if you analyse it you will see that this worker performed in his work, relative to his mental quotient and his category or occupational level, much better than his Director. It often happens that a subsequent low performance may oblige him to give up his dwelling and make do with a more modest one.
We believe that some diagrams drawn on paper with earthly coloured pencils will illustrate this more easily than if we offered you the same image with a photostatic reproduction of our plans. Compare, then, the description that follows with those drawings.
Our XAABI, save in exceptional cases, have the external appearance of the large thallophyte plants known on Earth as fungi. They consist, then, of two definite parts. A central tower or cylinder we call ANAUANAA, and at the top, what you might perhaps call the “CROWN”, a large circular enclosure topped by a dome. This enclosure, which constitutes the dwelling proper, is called XAABIUANNAA. (IMAGE 1).
The whole can rise or descend until the XAABIUANAA is level with the ground. This is achieved by means of a system which, as it is not known on EARTH, we shall liken to certain pneumatic equipment used by you. A kind of PISTON (YOOXAO) and a long pump barrel are of course used. The difference lies in the fact that instead of Air we use Sodium Vapour. At low temperature this metal remains in the solid state (IMAGE 2). The Piston, then, has descended, and with it our XAABI. But when we wish (Almost always at nightfall) to emerge and therefore rise to a certain level, a mechanism excites the sodium by nuclear-technical procedures. It passes rapidly into the vapour state, first liquefying, with a constant degree of expansion, causing the plunger (YOOXAO) to rise at a constant speed (IMAGE 3).

(U-C Note: The illustrations from the Aguirre compilation are shown in black and white)
Images 4 and 5 show you the distribution of the rooms that make up the XAABIUANNAA. In fact, by expressing ourselves in this way we might lead you to think that our rooms, as in the classic dwellings of Earth, have a definite function. That is, that there is a kind of Bedroom, a kitchen or a washroom. Nothing could be further from the truth. ANY OF OUR IAXAABI or rooms can be transformed to become a Bedroom, Meditarium, kitchen or games room. If in each of our dwelling towers there are five or six (Generally six) of these IAXAABI or rooms, it is because at a given moment one of them, for example, is being used as the children's bedroom, while in the second the father is preparing the meal, and in a third, turned into a washroom, the YIE or wife is mixing the essences for the steam bath that precedes the afternoon meal.

Let us look, then, at the modes that each of these IAXAABI or ROOMS can automatically adopt.
WOIWOAXAABI (It can be translated as MEDITARIUM) You would call it a Bedroom) This transformation of the room has two functions: PRAYING OR MEDITATING and SLEEPING. When in our next report we tell you about the course of a Day for an OMGEEYIE or MARRIED COUPLE OF UMMO, you will better understand the first Function.
Let us see how the YIE (WOMAN) who wishes at the end of the day to “go to bed” with her husband would proceed.
You know that a large part of the beings of UMMO lack a voice (We do not say “WE LACK” because those of us who are on Earth belong to the exceptional minority, although even we have to amplify the weak voice emitted by the vocal cords).
Well then: Despite everything, some miniaturized devices incorporated in our throat allow us to express ourselves with perfectly intelligible sounds. The range of frequencies, however, is more restricted than among you (For Earthmen it lies approximately between 20 and 10,000 cycles/second). On the other hand, by means of a very simple frequency-conversion system, we can artificially emit harmonics such as 15,000 and 20,000 cycles/sec. (ULTRASOUNDS), suitably encoded.
This allows what you would call the housewife on UMMO to emit a coded ultrasonic cry that acts on the mechanisms which start the various household appliances. Put more technically: The sound Frequency emitted is picked up by a sensitive receiver working with a magnetostriction microphone. By means of suitable servomechanisms, this receiver activates the various pieces of furniture or devices in typical use in the dwelling, hiding them or making them emerge from the floor.
This last point requires a preliminary explanation. Our IAXAABI (ROOMS) are usually empty of all furniture when none of the occupants of the dwelling is using them. Distributed over the surface of the floor are triangular, circular, square... plates painted in very bright colours: Carmine, blue, magenta and yellow among others. An earthling visiting our Planet for the first time, subject to the mental schemes of his World, would interpret those patches on the floor as modern ornamental motifs. (See image 4).
On the contrary, those geometric figures are veritable hatches from which emerge the devices that serve us as furniture or fittings. The colours follow a universal code representing each of the appliances. Thus the orange rectangle is the sign of a XAXOOU (SEAT).
Our YIE, then, emits an ultrasonic acoustic signal corresponding precisely to the XAXXOU (SEAT) at her feet, and it opens automatically. In image 6 you can see the system we use in our dwellings for sitting. A small pit serves to place and accommodate the legs. We do not use what you would call a cushion and backrest.
With GEE (HUSBAND) and YIE (WOMAN) seated, and the IAXAABI lit with a faint Cyan light, the twenty-four UIW (1 UIW = 3.1 minutes) that the OMGEEYIE devotes to the meditation and prayer preceding sleep go by. New acoustic signals will close the seats and turn off the lighting so that both may undress; she will turn it on again and set going the two devices of the two WOIOA. You would call them beds, and if you judge by the schematically drawn image No. 4 that is what they look like, although their structure resembles an earthly divan. It is necessary, then, to describe the WOIOA.
Two discs emerge from the floor and are soon separated from it by means of a system of electromagnetic levitation (The physical principle is known to you, although its realization is costly for you. A high-frequency field can keep any toroidal metal ring suspended in the void). Around these rings a conglomeration of foam begins to form, corresponding to an organic-chemical product that solidifies rapidly. A system of gaseous guidance of the process forces this amorphous foamy agglomerate to take the shape of a spongy divan.
But do not think that we always sleep on these WOIOA. It is prescribed, and we have been brought up this way since childhood, to sleep on alternate nights on the floor itself and without the help of any pillow. Our muscular tissues are thus kept in a physiologically fit state.
